Our Orthodontists

Dr. McCarthy

 Dr. McCarthy graduated from the University of Alabama School of Dentistry in 1983. He received his orthodontic training while serving in the military. During his ten years in the US Army, Dr. McCarthy rose to the rank of Major.  During this time he completed special forces training, making him a Green Beret, one of the most elite units in the Armed Forces.  Upon returning to Alabama at the end of his service, Dr. McCarthy founded Birmingham Orthodontics. He is a Board Certified orthodontist with nearly two decades of experience and has been listed in the Guide to America’s Top Dentists each year for the past ten years.

 

Dr. McCarthy met his wife, Vicky, when they both attended John Carroll High School. Both enjoy traveling around the country and as avid runners, they like to participate in unique races.  Dr. McCarthy has participated in numerous marathons including the Walt Disney Goofy Challenge which involves running a half marathon on Saturday and a full marathon on Sunday.  They are also actively involved in Prince of Peace Church.  Dr. McCarthy and his wife have two grown children, Katie and Brian, and five grandchildren.

Dr. Hartman

 Dr. Hartman has been practicing with Birmingham Orthodontics since 2003. She received her undergraduate degree in Natural Science and Mathematics from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She then attended Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry where she earned her DDS in 2000. At Meharry, Dr. Hartman received the American Association of Orthodontists Student Award and was inducted into the Omicron Kappa Upsilon dental honor society. Dr. Hartman then went on to the Howard University College of Dentistry in Washington, D.C. to receive her orthodontic training. There she was awarded the Faculty Award in Orthodontics.

 

Dr. Hartman and her husband, Corey, currently reside in Homewood, Alabama. Together they enjoy spending time with family, exercising, and reading. Dr. Hartman is an active member of the community currently serving on the Board of Directors for the University of Alabama at Birmingham National Alumni Society and the Juniors Board of Girls, Inc.

Dr. Rivers

 Dr. Rivers earned her bachelor’s degree in Biology from the University of Mississippi where she graduated summa cum laude. Upon graduating she was inducted into the prestigious honor societies Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi. Dr. Rivers then went on to earn her Doctor of Dental Medicine degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, She finished second in her class and received numerous honors including the Leon H. Schneyer Award and the Hinman Scholar Award. She also completed her specialty residency in orthodontics and a Master’s degree at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Certified by the American Board of Orthodontics in 2011, Dr. Rivers maintains active memberships with the American Dental Association, the Alabama Dental Association, the American Association of Orthodontists, and others.

 

Dr. Rivers and her husband, Marshall, enjoy reading, running, Ole Miss sports, and spending time with their friends and family. Dr. Rivers is active in her church and in the community. Currently, she serves on the Make-a-Wish Junior Advisory Council for the Alabama and Georgia Region.
